Bronze casting: Phil Omodamwen

During their trip to Nigeria, Beatrice von Bormann and Aude Mgba met artist Phil Omodamwen. In his workshop, they saw how he casts bronze sculptures from Benin in a special way. He is the sixth generation in his family to make bronze sculptures from Benin. The Omodamwen family belongs to the guild of bronze casters. This is a group of craftsmen who have been passing on this craft for centuries. His family joined this guild in the year 1504.

For more than 500 years, the family has preserved this knowledge and tradition. At the same time, they are constantly renewing the craft. Omodamwen is strongly committed to the return of the Benin bronzes. These works of art were forcibly taken by the British in 1897.
