The history of our collection
From Dirk Hannema...
The foundation for our Collection was laid by the art connoisseur Dirk Hannema (1895-1984). He founded the Hannema-de Stuers Fundatie Foundation. From this foundation later grew Museum de Fundatie. Hannema started with a personal art collection, but over time other collections were added. For instance of the De Graaff-Bachiene couple, artist Paul Citroen, actor Henk van Ulsen and lung specialist Willem Hogervorst. You will find ancient art, modern art and contemporary art. There are also special objects made of glass, ceramics and furniture. Many of them are from the 17th, 19th and the first half of the 20th century.
To a collection for Overijssel...
Since 1993, Museum de Fundatie has managed the modern and contemporary art collection of the province of Overijssel. An important part of this is the Citroen collection. This collection was collected by artist and collector Paul Citroen (1896-1983). Between 1975 and 1987, the province of Overijssel bought important parts of his collection.
The Paul Citroen collection covers the period 1900-1965. It includes works by well-known artists such as Jacoba van Heemskerck, Charley Toorop, Herman Kruyder, Jan Sluyters, Carel Willink and Piet Ouborg. There are also early works by Appel, Jorn and Corneille. Of course, the collection also includes work by Paul Citroen himself.
In the 1980s, the province bought new artworks to add to the Citroen collection. The province also wanted to show what happened in Dutch visual art after 1965. During that period, works by Armando, Guido Lippens, Thomas Rajlich, Hans Ebeling Koning, Jaap van den Ende, Nick Banks, Joep van Lieshout and Henk Visch, among others, were bought. Even today, art is occasionally bought or donated.
