Miguel Chevalier (b. 1959) is one of the founding fathers of digital art. When terms like virtual reality and AI art did not mean anything to anyone, he was already working with algorithms and computer code as artistic tools.
A pioneer ahead of his field
Miguel Chevalier studied at Paris' most renowned art academies and developed his unique visual language from the 1980s, long before computers were commonplace. He now works from his studio near Paris on work that combines the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, with questions that have preoccupied people for centuries: what is nature, what do we make of it, and what do we leave of it?
Chevalier explores themes of nature and artificiality, digital networks, urban spaces, architecture and the influence of technology on our imagination. His work is often monumental and sensory: visitors are immersed in images that constantly change and sometimes react to their movements.
Internationally acclaimed
His installations and exhibitions have been shown at international venues, including the Grand Palais Immersif in Paris, Kunsthalle Munich, Saatchi Gallery in London, Musée Soulages in Rodez, Ara Art Center in Seoul, Jeonnam Museum of Art in Gwangyang, Château d'If in Marseille, Durham Cathedral, King's College Chapel in Cambridge, Saint-Eustache in Paris, Iconsiam in Bangkok and the Base sous-marine in Bordeaux. His exhibition Digital by Nature was at Kunsthalle München from September 2025 to March 2026.
